A synthetic, sulfation-defined methyl glycoside of a chondroitin sulfate-related disaccharide, GlcAβ1-3GlcNAc with 6-O-sulfation on the hexosamine, mimicking CS-C-type sulfation patterning on a GlcNAc-containing backbone. Chondroitin sulfate (CS) is a sulfated glycosaminoglycan composed of repeating GlcAβ1-3GalNAc disaccharide units (and, in CS-related structures, GlcAβ1-3GlcNAc) carrying defined sulfation patterns, found as a major component of proteoglycans in cartilage, extracellular matrix, and neural tissue. Sulfation positions on the hexosamine (4S, 6S, 4,6S) define the CS subtype (CS-A, CS-C, CS-E) and tune binding to growth factors, chemokines, and axon-guidance proteins. Synthetic, sulfation-defined CS-like fragments are valuable probes for sulfation-pattern-dependent protein binding and matrix biology research.
